Chinos: Urban Tiki House & Taiwanese Cantina

By Jenni Liu

CAPITOL HILL— Chino’s is a one-of-a-kind eatery located in the heart of Capitol Hill on East Pike St. The decor and atmosphere are both intriguing and unique. With influences from two of the most dominant ethnic cultures in Los Angeles, this “Taiwanese Cantina” is a chill spot for comfort food and vibrant cocktails.

The Fish Sauce Chicken Wings are some of the best wings in the city, as voted by Seattle Weekly. These wings are finger-lickin’, napkin-wipin’ good with an intense combination of sticky, sweet, salty, and spicy flavors.

The house-made Sweet Corn Tamal is made with masa cornmeal stuffed with a green chili and cheese and wrapped in a corn husk. The sweetness is what sets this tamale from the rest — almost reminiscent of cornbread.

Gua Bao Platter is your choice of three pork belly or tofu buns with pickled mustard greens, cilantro, and crushed sweet peanuts.

Other menu items include Lonchero Street tacos, Zha Jiang Mein (“Chinese spaghetti”) with minced pork, hot bean paste, sweet bean sauce, over noodles, and Rice Bowl of the Day. Though the menu is small, every item is delicious — you can’t go wrong.

Featured cocktails include classics like Pina Colada and Mai Tai as well as fun, unique cocktails like “Voodoo Grog” with Don Q Gold rum, St. James Rhum Agricole, Navy Grog mix, honey, passion fruit syrup, lime, and egg white and the “Zombie” with Appleton Estate rum, Don Q Gold rum, falernum, Luxardo Maraschino, Don’s Mix, grenadine, Pernod, Angostura, pineapple, lime, and Lemon Hart 151 float. How about the Nui Nui, Three Dots and a Dash, Death in the South Pacific, or Viking Fog Cutter

Many of the tiki drinks can be made into a shareable, flaming Volcano Bowl that serves up to 4 people. Make your way here soon!
