Neighborhood Restaurant Jones Brothers & Co. Opens With A Nod to Historic Ballard

Neighborhood restaurant and bar Jones Brothers & Co. has opened in the former BalMar in Ballard. Drawing inspiration from Ballard’s beloved Jones Brothers Meats, owner Kevin Carlson’s grandfather Ken Jones’ famed butcher shop, the community-focused restaurant continues a family tradition of friendly service, integrity and quality that stretches back four generations.

“I grew up sitting on the street outside of Jones Brothers Meats, watching families come in to grab steaks for dinner and chatting with the fisherman as they passed by with their daily catch,” said Carlson, who also owns neighborhood restaurant Shelter Lounge. “I wanted to create a laid-back, local hangout that harkened back to the Scandinavian Ballard that meant so much to me. A place that welcomes both the whole family and those looking to relax and unwind after a hard day’s work.”

The approachable menu features salads, choose-your-own handmade pasta with meatballs, sandwiches, and more. A nod to Carlson’s Swedish background, the Handmade Pastas & Meatballs features four pasta options, including Black Pepper Pappardelle and Arugula Fettuccine, paired with five meatballs options, such as the Jones Ball with beef, bacon, cheese and onion, Pork & Sage, or Pork, Beef & Lamb, topped with one of seven sauces like Swedish, Jones Brothers Steak, or Tomato. Savory sandwich options include: Reuben with 1000 Island dressing, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, pastrami, and onion on caraway rye bread; Jones Brother Burger with grass fed beef, goat cheese pepper spread and balsamic vinaigrette; and Meatball Sub with a choice of meatballs and sauce on hoagie roll.

Per the request of Carlson’s wife, tasty meatless options are always available, such as: a Mushroom & Vegetable MeatballMushroom Dip with grilled portabella, seasonal mushrooms, provolone cheese, caramelized onions all on a ciabatta roll served with a side of mushroom au jus; Brussels Sprouts with caramelized onion and feta; and the ever popular Tater Tots, customized with sweet, spicy or truffle sauce.

For those looking to wet their whistle, and extensive cocktail, beer and wine list will do just that. Two cocktails are available on draft: Gail’s Negroni, Counter Gin, Noilly Prat Sweet Vermouth, and Campari served over a large ice cube with an orange slice; and Arch Angel’s Old Fashioned, Markers Mark, Demerara sugar, and bitters served over a large ice cube with an orange twist and a cherry. Handcrafted cocktails include: Scratch’s Sour with bourbon, Giffard Apricot, honey black tea syrup, lemon, egg white, and black walnut bitters; Hedger’s Margarita with tequila, ancho reyes chili, dill, cucumber, and Scrappy’s Firewater finished with a habanero salt rim; and Lillian’s Spritzwith vanilla bean Aperol, St. George Spiced Pear and prosecco.

Reminiscent of Old Ballard, the space has an industrial feel with exposed brick walls, reclaimed wood community tables, and plush leather barstools. The upstairs lounge features cozy couches to sink back into while enjoying a cocktail. Perfect for corporate events, weddings, or special occasions, the lounge can be reserved for private events up to 150 people and features its own private bar.

Jones Brothers & Co. is open Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. to close and Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to close. It is located at 5449 Ballard Ave NW. Follow Jones Brother & Co. on Facebook or Instagram.
