John Sundstrom to Open Southpaw

Pizza and Soft Serve in the Original Lark Space

John Sundstrom and his partners at Lark, Kelly Ronan and JM Enos, are thrilled to announce the reincarnation of the original, beloved Lark space on 12th Avenue. It will reopen this fall as Southpaw, a casual wood-fired pizza restaurant.

The name is a nod to all things unorthodox—batting left-handed, a left-handed boxer’s stance, and pizzas that are somewhere in-between Neapolitan and New York style, with familiar toppings as well as some out of left field.

Pizzas will be cooked quickly in a wood-fired oven and toppings will be mostly vegetarian, with a list of optional meat add-ons. In addition to pizza, there will be a garden section of the menu with salads and vegetable sides, as well as rotating cheese and charcuterie offerings. Much of the produce will come from Lark’s rooftop garden, less than half a mile north on 12th Avenue.

Desserts will be simple: JM’s famous salted chocolate chip cookies and soft serve in two flavors—one adventurous and one a little more standard, but they’ll always be complementary to one another, for those who prefer the swirl.

As for drinks, everything will be on tap—no bottles at all. To start, there will be one red, one white, two beers, one cocktail, and one soda available.

The familiar space will be updated with bright splashes of orange and punchy graphic art. The service will match the casual feel of the redesigned space: guests will order at a counter and food will be delivered to tables.

Opened in 2003, and relocated to the Central Agency Building in December of 2014, Lark is an artisan-focused restaurant in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood. Chef John Sundstrom, a James Beard Award-winner, is known for his intimate knowledge and deft use of the Northwest’s unique ingredients and has created the perfect place to celebrate the bounty of the region. The menu changes with the seasons, highlighting the best tastes available, and the elegant dining room won Restaurant Design of the Year at the Seattle Design Awards in 2015. Dinner is served daily from 5pm to 11pm. Weekend brunch is on from 10am to 2pm. There is additional seating and a raw bar on Lark’s mezzanine, lofted above the dining room, and Off The Record, a private event space, is located below.
